Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a medical treatment used to treat aging-related diseases such as thyroid disorders, menopause in women, and andropause in men. HRT can be beneficial for men when testosterone starts to lower, causing andropause. When receiving HRT, men can lose weight, gain muscle, improve energy, and prevent age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction, low libido (sex drive), and sarcopenia (muscle loss).

For women, HRT should be initiated when a woman starts seeing signs of hormonal imbalance. Common signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalance include symptoms of insomnia, depression, irritability, low energy levels, weight gain, hair loss, skin changes, hot flashes, night sweats, and low sex drive (low libido).

What is the difference between weekly hormone injections and pellet hormonal implants?

Depending on your preference, patients may choose to take weekly injections for HRT or get pellet hormonal implants. Pellets implants are implanted in either glute using sterile instruments after creating a small opening with a scalpel. After they have been implanted, the opening is closed using a suture or sterile strips. Pellet implant effects last anywhere from 3-4 months. The benefits of pellets compared to weekly injections are not having to self-inject weekly and not having your levels fluctuate as often. In comparison to weekly injections, when patients have pellet implants, we are not able to take the pellets out after they have been implanted. Patients would have to wait until the pellets have dissolved on their own. If a higher dose is required after initial pellet implantation, more pellets can be implanted to adjust the dose.

Furthermore, patients may prefer weekly injections instead of pellets as this allows us to modify dosing as symptoms begin to change. Patients would take home their testosterone and would be given the injection supplies needed for their weekly injections. If you are not familiar with administering testosterone injections, we can teach you at the clinic once it has been prescribed to you.

*A follow-up appointment with new labs is required every six months to continue getting Hormone Replacement Therapy prescribed to you.
